The conduction of sound takes place in two ways: through air and via bone. Our skull also picks up sonic vibrations. Via bone conduction our eardrum vibrates, because of which we perceive sound; we can hear it. Therefore, sound can never be blocked out completely, just by blocking the ear canal.

OK but not great
I can’t wear these all night as I’m a side sleeper and after a while they hurt my ear. They muffle the sound rather than block it and if my partner is snoring loudly I can still hear him.

Blocks some noise, but not what keeps you up
I got these to stop hearing my partners snoring but I can still hear it clearly. Yes, it does block some distance noises that otherwise would have kept me up, it doesn't block the sound of my partner snoring next to me and sometimes even sounds from the next room.
