Pests such as ants, spiders, mice and cockroaches can cause allergic reactions and trigger asthma flare-ups. These reactions can be caused by the proteins found in the flakes of skin or dander, saliva or urine of pests.
The house dust mite gets its name from where it likes to live - household dust. The skin flakes in indoor dust are the main food that dust mites eat. Dust mites are tiny insects that are hard to see with your eyes. They are less than half a millimetre in length, with an oval-shaped body and no wings. They can live for around 2 months or so, depending on the conditions. It is the protein found in dust mite's droppings that you may be allergic to.
While there is no way to be certain you won't encounter pests in your home, there are things you can do to reduce their numbers.
Some steps you can take include:
Consider having a home pest treatment from a professional or use household pest control products.
Vacuum your floors regularly, particularly carpets and rugs where pests and pest droppings could be hiding.
Wash your bed linens, curtains, and other washable fabrics in hot water at least once a week.
Use a dehumidifier to maintain a relative humidity below 50% to make your home less hospitable to pests and dust mites
Air purifiers with HEPA filters capture tiny dust mite particles and some small bugs, making your room cleaner and less sneezy.
Dehumidifiers pull water out of the air, making it less comfy for bugs and dust mites to live and grow. Less moisture means fewer pests!
Pillow protectors are like armor for your pillows. They block dust mites and bugs, giving you a cleaner place to rest.
Allergy-sensitive quilts have built in Anti-Microbial qualities that inhibits the growth of bacteria, mould and dust mites.
